Black & Red

Black History is not just about slavery. Valentines Day is not just about couple love.

Please don't get me wrong. Black History includes the brutal enslavement of men and women of color during a very dark time of our national history. I am simply saying that it is not the only thing to be published during February as Black History month.

Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915. From this "Negro History Week" was instituted to recognize the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. I must say that focusing on the accomplishments of so many Black courageous, inventive, and inspirational minds has been a delight to me. Maya Angelou, George Washington Carver, Sidney , Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Gwendolyn Brooks, and so very many more! I cannot begin to list all of the biographies or writings of these men and women that have made deep impressions on me. They have allowed me to see all people of all colors who have surpassed hard histories as examples for me. Yes, me, an older (not old) white woman who has experienced small set backs for those reasons. But I am encouraged when I see or hear people of color celebrating their own and rising above the injustice and pain. We can all celebrate Black History Month and we should.

Again, don't get me wrong about Valentine couples either. Certainly the love between two people should be celebrated, but the reason for Valentines Day is not only for them, but for every person, because we are all loved by God.

St. Valentine ministered to persecuted Christians by sending notes to encourage them during their difficult circumstances. He reminded them of God's love for them even when the world hated them. So, it is because of his example of encouragement that we should send out notes of encouragement to those who maybe do not feel loved or cared for. It is fun to receive hearts, flowers, candy, and poetry from those we love, but we should open our eyes to the forgotten little ones. If we are Christians we should be open-hearted with God's love for the unlovable. We, ourselves, are loved by The Almighty God even when we are most unlovable. He continuously sends us little messages of love every day: beautiful sunrises or sunsets, birds chirping happy songs, rain and sunshine, blossoms and shade from trees, tasty foods and sweet scents, and so many other gifts. We are covered in love. If only we would open our eyes to see and ears to hear, then every day we would receive a valentine from the One who loves us perfectly. Let's celebrate love every day and for all people!

Happy February everyone! Sending you my love and admiration!
