Jesus Gave Gifts

Another Advent Adventure to ponder.

When Jesus came long ago, He didn't start ministering to people in public until He was thirty years old. When Jesus attended a wedding feast His mother asked Him to help the family because they ran out of wine. Why would she ask if she did not know His ability to do something to help? Had He supplied some of her needs in the past? She was very sure He could help and encouraged the servants to follow His orders. Jesus gave the gift of wine not just to the wedding guests, but in honor of His mother.

This was not the only time Jesus provided for people. Peter hauled in a boatload of fish at the instruction of Jesus. Jesus blessed a few fish and bread to feed huge crowds. He provided for these things free of charge. They were gifts given because of the need of the people. I imagine Jesus giving hugs to those who needed a little love, just like He embraced the little children the people brought to Him.

So as we give gifts to others this Christmas, what does Jesus' example tell us? A friend of mine once shared her list for giving gifts. 1) Give gifts that build others up and honors them. 2) Give to recognize their place in your life. 3) Give to fill them with joy and pleasure. 4) Give to cause them to do unto others. Jesus gave in this way and so should we.

Jesus, You are a generous giver! I may never be able to turn water into wine, but I can turn frowns into smiles. Forgive me when I choose to be selfish. Open my eyes to the needs around me and give me a heart that wants to give freely and generously without any expectation in return. I give You a place in my heart!
